Background

Many young women still complain that they were raised to be married, while their brothers were raised to be CEOs of corporations. At C2L college speeches, young women implore us to provide them with guidance or mentors that would help them make the transition from university student to independent employee and woman—helping her think through who she is, what she wants to do, and teach her how to negotiate, how to manage finances, and other critical life skills.

In order to develop effective curriculum and training for contemporary young women, C2L will conduct a series of focus groups at universities across the country and conduct a national poll of young female college students. C2L will continue its campus-based training and will look to expand mentoring opportunities through its broader-based work.

The Young Women’s Guidance and Mentor Project will provide young women an opportunity to become empowered in four areas:

  1. Self-governance (the belief in being able to lead her own life);

  2. Sustaining relationships with female mentors and later serving as mentors for the next generation;

  3. Financial Literacy (with an emphasis on savings and investment in home ownership and retirement programs); and

  4. Leadership skills (critical thinking, problem solving, resource development, and networking).
